"We Don't Sell Blocks" Exploring Minecraft's Commissioning Market We have witnessed a rise in videogames that use the creation of content in game as their main mode of play. Even though there is a literature that has explored various characteristics of these games, one of the aspects that warrants further exploration is the ways in which monetisation strategies could emerge from their setting. SZV7 Our ethnographic study revealed an active market for commissioning in the Minecraft creative community. Our findings reveal three main players that comprise this market: the players, who own Minecraft servers; the contractors, who handle the clients' orders of Minecraft maps and the developers who are the ones responsible for the creation of these maps. Our research has revealed that the product in question is not in-game content, as one would expect however, it is the process of creating it. These results suggest that commissioning within Minecraft is a well-organized process, initiated and sustained solely by the players of the community - plays an important role in the game's current structure. Additionally they challenge the notion that the creation of content in gaming environments is free labor that is exploited by the developers of those games.
